About the WPHS
The West Pasco Historical society was founded in 1973, according to their web site. The WPHS lot at Circle Boulevard and Grand Boulevard in downtown New Port Richey is called Enchantment Square, according to Terry Kline, current president of the Society. The site consists of the old one-room schoolhouse, where the museum and research library are located, and a restored gazebo/band stand. Behind it is a Pasco historical site, the Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church.
WPHS Projects
On their to-do list:
- Renovations to the handicapped-accessible ramp, sidewalks, sprinkler system (by the city), plantings (by the Garden Club)
- Focusing the museum exhibits on things more closely related to West Pasco
- Turning the library into a research library
- Laminating old issues of the “New Port Richey Press” and the “Port Richey Press” for easy use
- Local genealogy, using obituaries and word of mouth to document the family trees of prominent families
- Obituary database created by volunteers combing the old papers and entering obituaries into a database
Upcoming @ WPHS
- Founders Day
Sept. 26-28
Among other downtown events, WPHS will be featuring the History of the Train in New Port Richey. The Model Train club will have an exhibit there.
What Can You Do for the WPHS?
- Besides help with the projects listed above, the WPHS would like to open during the summer. They could do that if they had more volunteers. A few hours out of your month would make a big difference to them. Society Vice President Dannee Brooks says they need 4 people to open for a 4-hour shift.
- Do people throw money at you? The WPHS site says they’re looking for a fundraiser.
